Managing menopause naturally
Women are increasingly hesitant to use hormone therapy for complaints that accompany menopause. Such treatment is thought to carry a higher risk of breast cancer, strokes and heart attacks. Dutch health newsletter Medisch Dossier (May 2006) lists some natural measures that may relieve the symptoms of menopause:
1. Aromatherapy employs essential oils that have been extracted from medicinal plants. Sage is believed to relieve tension and depression and bring hormones into balance. Chamomile with lavender promotes relaxation. Juniper berry and rosemary can relieve muscle and joint pain.
2. Omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent post-menopausal osteoporosis, breast cancer and heart and circulatory complaints.
3. The flavonoid hesperidin, an antioxidant plant pigment found in citrus fruit, is used to treat hot flashes in combination with a daily dose of 1200 mg of vitamin C.
4. Vitamin E can provide relief from symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings and vaginal dryness. The recommended amount is 400 IU of vitamin E twice a day for four weeks.
5. Walking, yoga or other exercise may reduce some complaints, like joint pain.
