Aromatherapy for Troubled Teens
By Tracey Mumford Think back: adolescence was one of the most difficult stages of your life. Nothing has changed! Sure, you’ve passed that point in your life, but now your kids are going through it. During your child’s adolescence, your kid won’t only encounter strange physical changes including acne and weight issues, but they’ll also be prone to emotional conflicts. They’re trapped in an awkward stage: they’re no longer a child, nor are they an adult–they want freedom, but no the responsibilities that come with it.
Because of these conflicts, teens have shown many stress-related symptoms including anxiety, sleep disorders, bouts of depression, and even eating disorders. As a result, many teens have a tendency to shut down–without discussing their problems at home. This is very difficult for parents.
To keep your teen away from ‘coping mechanisms’ such as drugs, alcohol, negative peers, and dangerous behavior in general–try aromatherapy. Explain aromatherapy to your child. If they ask what it is, say: “It’s a natural way of releasing stress and tension. It also helps you stay focused.” Which is exactly what aromatherapy will do for your teenager. The Isolated Teenager
The following aromatherapy recipes can be used to help your teen deal with their emotional stress. If your teen seems isolated into a ’dream-like’ world, which includes hours upon hours of television programs, internet, and lying in their bed, try:
? 3 drops Sage
? 4 drops Lavender
? 2 drops German Chamomile
Massage the neck, shoulder-blades, and shoulders of your teenager. Pour 15- 20 drops of this blend into a hot bath and have them soak in the mixture for at least 15 minutes. Give them a book and or magazine to encourage their relaxation. The Anxious Teenager
Many teenagers worry about things that are out of their control. This worry is normal. Nevertheless, if the worry becomes excessive, your teen may have an anxiety or panic disorder. Teens with panic disorders often fear death, injury, and often detach themselves from reality. Their ideas are distorted and they may complain of having difficulty breathing, racing heart, and light-headedness. These are all classic symptoms of a panic attack.
In order to soothe your teens fears and physical discomfort, try this essential oil blend:
? 2 drops Roman Chamomile
? 1 drop Rose Otto
Massage the teenagers heart chakra and solar plexus. Pour 15-20 drops of the mixture into a hot bath. Tell them to take in a hot bath, it will help them relax. Encourage them to take deep slow breaths in the tub.
